Monkstown Golden Gloves 2026: Day Two & What Grassroots Boxing Taught Us

Day two at the Monkstown Golden Gloves Skills Tournament brought Southpaw back inside Monkstown Dublin Boxing Club for another full day around young fighters, coaches and families.

After Saturday's opening day, Sunday 4 October was less about simply being present at an event and more about what the weekend was showing us: how young boxers develop, what families actually look for in boxing equipment, and why grassroots clubs matter to the future of the sport.

The Golden Gloves weekend at Fitzgerald Park in Dún Laoghaire was built around skills bouts. Monkstown Dublin Boxing Club describes these as non-competitive bouts with no winner or loser, designed to help young boxers develop their skills and prepare for future competition.

What day two showed us about young boxers

One thing became especially clear across the weekend: this was a young boxing audience.

For many families, the equipment conversation starts differently from the elite end of boxing. Parents are thinking about fit, comfort, durability and whether something is genuinely useful for a boxer who is still growing and developing. Young fighters, meanwhile, still care about how their kit looks and feels when they put it on.

Sunday reinforced that for us. Interest was strongest around youth sizing, and the weekend gave us useful first-hand feedback about what younger fighters and their families actually need from boxing products.

That matters because Southpaw should not design only for the fighter already competing at the highest level. The young boxer learning their footwork in a local club matters too.

Skills bouts are about development, not results

Competitive boxing naturally focuses attention on results. Skills bouts serve a different purpose.

Monkstown Dublin Boxing Club explains that its underage boxers take part in skills bouts to prepare for competitive boxing. There is no decision and no winner or loser; the emphasis is on skills and preparation.

The public Golden Gloves event information also stated that each boxer would receive at least two skills bouts across the weekend. That repetition is important: young fighters get ring experience without every moment being judged by a win-loss record.

Watching that environment up close is a reminder that development in boxing is built session by session, round by round and bout by bout.

Why boxing-specific equipment matters as fighters develop

Footwork is one of the fundamentals young boxers begin learning long before they reach championship level: stance, balance, positioning, movement and distance.

Southpaw boxing socks were designed specifically around the demands of boxing, with forefoot grip, heel-lock construction, breathable mesh, moisture management, cushioning and durability.

They are now worn by 10 World Champions, 16 Olympians and 6 Olympic Medalists, as well as more than 100 world-ranked fighters across 35+ countries, and were recognised by Fit2Box as the World's Best Boxing Socks in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

But equipment should never be presented as a shortcut. Socks do not teach footwork; coaches do. Good equipment should simply support the fighter while they learn, train and compete.

Listening to parents and clubs changes how we build

Some of the most useful moments at events happen outside the ring.

Across the weekend, conversations with parents, coaches and clubs gave us a clearer picture of what matters at grassroots level. Youth sizing matters. Reliable availability matters. Clubs need straightforward ways to kit out groups of fighters. Parents need products that make sense for the stage their boxer is at.

Those conversations influence what Southpaw does next. Being physically present at events means we can learn from the people using the products rather than relying only on online data.

Building relationships with grassroots boxing clubs

The weekend also continued something that has become increasingly important for Southpaw: building genuine relationships with boxing clubs.

We spoke with clubs about their fighters and equipment needs, and several of those conversations are continuing after the event. Monkstown also invited Southpaw to return to future Saturday sessions.

For clubs looking for competition kit, socks or a longer-term supply relationship, our Southpaw Club Partners programme explains how we work with boxing clubs.

The aim is not to appear at a club once, sell something and disappear. The better model is to listen, learn what clubs actually need and build relationships that last.

Monkstown is becoming an important part of the Southpaw story

This was Southpaw's second Monkstown event of 2026.

In July, Southpaw attended the 2026 Monkstown International Box Cup at Dublin's National Stadium, an international competition involving clubs from multiple countries.

Golden Gloves was different. Smaller, younger and focused on development rather than tournament results.

Together, the two events showed two important parts of amateur boxing: competition and development.

Southpaw wants to remain close to both.

What we took away from day two

Sunday finished the Golden Gloves weekend, but the useful work did not end when the boxing stopped.

We left with better insight into youth demand, new and developing club relationships, and another reminder of why grassroots boxing needs to remain part of Southpaw as the brand grows internationally.

World Champions and Olympians wearing Southpaw is something we will always be proud of. Seeing young boxers at the beginning of that same journey matters for a different reason.

They are the next generation of the sport.

And we intend to keep showing up for them.
